Time to Move On

I have said before that don’t like to do art that is personal or expressive. My art is more about escaping from reality and showing images that aren’t so personal. There is one painting I did that definitely breaks these rules. It is a painting that I have mostly kept to myself and not talked about. I did finally exhibit it last year. The painting is disturbing to me, but the casual observer would never get it without explanation. It is just a still life with an unusual composition.

The composition was intentional. I know it probably troubles a lot of people who have a need for order and symmetry. Art and design should never be a slave to order and symmetry. Sometimes a composition like this better serves the statement than more orderly designs. Asymetrical designs are also better at creating a strong sense of energy. In this case the composition captures the complex feeling that was present in my life when this was painted.

So far only one person has ever figured out the meaning of this. Since I don’t really like to get personal, I’ll leave it for you to try and get it. You can email me if you want me to confirm or deny your guess. Maybe I should offer a free drawing or painting to the person who gets it right first?
