Anatomical Forms

“Anatomical Forms” is another early work, done with pencil on illustration board. It was done while I was at MIAD, but it was not done for any class project. This is a surreal piece, influenced by Tanguy and Bellmer, but also continuing the style I started in “The Guardian,” exploring that same sort of sculptural organic shape coming from my imagination, taking it a step further away from a realistic scene. It still feels realistic, but this is not any definite real-world object or even alien creature. This is an impossible anatomy, purely from my imagination and becoming abstract. It isn’t meant to be horror and isn’t meant to be erotic. It isn’t anything I saw in any dream. I created this almost through an automatic writing process, though I did that as a study first and then created the more refined drawing. I wanted to explore what I consider to be the strongest aspect of “The Guardian” and make that the entire piece instead of trying to put it into a landscape. This departs from what I consider to be my typical style, but I do love surrealism. This is one of my favorite works and I would love to do a companion piece sometime.
