Humidifier

This is a pencil drawing on paper of a single room humidifier I use. I have been honing my drawing skills after a long absence from drawing and painting and saw this as a good challenge. It is just a study, just practice. I have seen artists who do large work of single objects like this. Their work is technically perfect with excellent compositions and great technical skill. Ultimately though, their work is just an ordinary object without much meaning. It’s safe art, devoid of idea, devoid of statement, devoid of taking us to someplace new or expanding our minds. It’s very decorative.
I like to do work like this as studies, helping me to challenge myself and take my skills to new levels, so I will continue to do some works like this. But I do not see this as Art. I do not know why anybody would want a sketch of some manufacturer’s commercial object hanging on their wall. It says nothing about the object, no matter how well rendered it is. It does say volumes about us when we choose this sort of art over more challenging works.
But it is a nice drawing.
