Gazebo

This acrylic painting was done in tandem with my wife, Gail. We had shot some photos in Sheboygan Falls. Gail picked one of them for us to paint. We did our paintings independently, Gail choosing a very descriptive realism, while I chose to do an impressionist style. Both of these were going to be exhibited and we were running out of time when I finally started this. It ended up being completed in two evenings. After the first evening I was discouraged with where it was going and figured this would be one of those paintings that never comes together. Sometimes that happens and you gesso over it and do something else. But the second evening of working on this brought it together. Not my best painting, but still worked in the end. My goal was to capture a very summery, golden light and paint it very loose. My favorite part of this image is the winding sidewalk that defines the composition and leads your eye. The space is both flat and illusionistic.
